Meet the Counselor

MEET THE COUNSELOR

Hello!  My name is Ms. Kelly McGonegle and I am the school counselor at Black Bob and Heritage this year!  I graduated from Northwest Missouri State University where I received a B.S. Ed. degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling.  I worked previously as a K-2 counselor in Warrensburg, MO and now I’m thrilled to be joining Olathe Public Schools!

The mission of our guidance program is to address the needs of all students by facilitating their academic, career, and personal/social development as well as helping create a positive and safe learning climate in our school.  The school counseling program works to provide services, programs, and interventions to support students in becoming life-long learners.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year!  J

3rd Grade Chiefs Red Tailgating

 3rd Grade Chiefs Red Tailgating

The students in Mrs. Mulligan and Mrs. Stanley’s 3rd grade classes “tailgated” at Arrowhead Park on a beautiful Friday afternoon.  Thanks to some wonderful parents, the football fans, dressed in Chiefs red enjoyed grilled hotdogs, chips and cookies.

Planning Begins for Elementary Construction Projects

Thanks to the successful passing of the June 2013 bond by voters in the Olathe Public Schools, district staff are hard at work planning for construction projects at elementary schools across the district. Staff are meeting with architects and design work is beginning on the projects that include transitioning the district’s final set of elementary school classrooms without doors to classrooms with doors and the reconfiguring of front entrances to feature pinch points. A detailed plan for each building and communication about construction will be forthcoming as final details are determined. It is anticipated that the majority of these projects will begin this winter and are expected to be complete by next fall. Look for regular updates as we move forward.

Rachel's Challenge
Fifth-Graders to Experience Kindness and Compassion Program

Fifth-graders in the district will be able to benefit from the lessons of Rachel’s Challenge by attending a program at a middle school in September.  Heritage 5th Graders will be going to Indian Trail on Wednesday, September 18th.  These programs are age -appropriate, will highlight the importance of kindness and compassion and will make no mention of the tragedy of Columbine. Students will learn about doing simple acts of kindness and compassion and how to create a KC (Kindness and Compassion) club to make their school a better place. Spreading the positive message of kindness and compassion, in an age-appropriate way, to the district’s fifth-graders is an exciting complement to other Rachel’s Challenge programs throughout the district.

Principal's Message

Principal's Message
With the 2013-2014 school year under way, I wanted to talk a little bit about one of my favorite school activities, Student of the Week Lunches.  Each week, 2 students from all our classrooms are chosen by their teachers to each lunch with me.  Each student is chosen for a specific reason, and I get the opportunity to share that reason with them during lunch.  Reasons for being chosen can range from "new student at our school who is making a very nice transition to Heritage," to "making great progress on learning math facts."

Whatever the reason, I feel it's important to celebrate accomplishments with our students.  We know when students are recognized for success, it motivates them to want to continue to succeed.  This also gives me the chance to get to know our students a little bit more.  I thoroughly enjoy hearing stories about what is going on with their friends, what they may be doing over the weekend, or things they have been learning about in class.  Making connections with students is an important part of my job, and it also happens to be one of the best parts of my job!

I would encourage parents to recognize accomplishments over the dinner table nightly, or even weekly.  Giving our students a chance to "brag" about themselves gives them the opportunity to look for the good in their day or week, rather than the bad.  Looking for the good in people has been and will continue to be a focus at Heritage for our staff and students.  Student of the Week lunch is just one way we are doing this, and we hope to continue finding other ways to recognize all the wonderful things our students and staff are doing!

Sincerely,

Scott McFarland
