FEE BASED EARLY CHILDHOOD PEER PARTICIPATION SLOTS

FEE BASED EARLY CHILDHOOD PEER PARTICIPATION SLOTS

The Early Childhood Disabilities program of the Olathe Public Schools incorporates typically developing children into the program.  These students are referred to as “Peers”.
Definition of a “peer” for the ECD program includes children that do not have, or are not suspected of having a disability.  Eligibility to be considered, or to maintain status as a peer in this program requires meeting this definition.

The Olathe Public Schools believes it is important to provide preschoolers with special needs, (Speech/Language delays, behavior concerns, fine and gross motor delays, hearing impairments, genetic disorders, etc.)  the opportunity to learn with peers who are typically developing.

The application process for the 2018 -2019 school year begins on January 9, 2018.
Children must be three or four on or before August 31st in order to participate in the upcoming school year.  Children must speak and understand English and also be toilet trained.

Benefits your child can receive by being a peer participant:
·         More positive/accepting attitudes about people with disabilities
·         More social skills
·         Equal, if not greater, developmental progress
·         Access to a highly qualified teacher
·         Good student to teacher ratio

For information about the application process contact Kim Russell at 913-780-7341 or by email: peerapprequest@olatheschools.org. (There are no waiting lists for future years.)

Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart

Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart

This year our 3rd -5th Grade Hound Dogs took the challenge to not only eat healthy and get 60 minutes of exercise a day, but also help raise some money for the American Heart Association.  The money raised by students all over the county, who participate in Jump Rope / Hoops for Heart, helps to fund cardiovascular research and education that helps save lives right here in our community as well as around the country.

Our 3rd - 5th Graders raised $1,030.00!!!  We are so proud of their efforts and generosity!

To celebrate, each class participated in a Jump Rope / Hoops for Heart Event where they rotated through six separate jump rope and basketball stations.  Everyone had a great time and we look forward to continuing this tradition next year too!

Kindergarten Round-Up

Kindergarten Round-Up

Heritage Elementary will hold Kindergarten Round-Up on Thursday,  February 23rd from 1:00-6:00 PM.  We will enroll all students who will be 5 years of age on or before August 31st, 2017 for the 2017-2018 school year.  Kindergarten Enrollment is an opportunity for parents to complete pre-enrollment paperwork in preparation for our July 27th all-school enrollment.  Round-Up usually takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Your kindergartner is welcome to come too.

Please bring the following for your child:
o   official state birth certificate
o   child’s social security number
o   immunization records
o   parent numbers
o   emergency contact numbers
o   daycare and doctor information
o   proof of residency

Parents will receive physical and dental examination forms that are to be completed for each child.  Immunizations must be completed before students begin school in August.  Kindergarten Round-Up is the time to apply for full day kindergarten or request the half day class.  Afternoon kindergarten will not be offered at Heritage next year.  We will only offer morning kindergarten to those interested in the half day class.

On Sneak A Peek Night/Back to School Night on August 14th your child will bring school supplies and the teacher will supply more information regarding curriculum.

We look forward to seeing you!

Is it a Cold or the Flu?

Is it a Cold or the Flu?

Heritage has a few positive cases of influenza upon returning from Winter Break. Please monitor your child for the symptoms below.  The cold and the flu are both respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different types of viruses with different symptoms.  Here is a quick chart to review the differences:
Signs and Symptoms
Influenza
Cold
Symptom onset
Rapid
Gradual
Fever
High fever/chills

Body Aches

In addition to getting the flu vaccine, you should take these steps to avoid spreading germs:
·         Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
·         Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.  Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.
·         Try to avoid contact with sick people.
·         If you get the flu, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.
·         Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs spread this way.
·         Children need to be fever free for 24 hours without medication to return to school.

If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse.
