Battle of the Brains

Battle of the Brains
QUEST students from Heritage, Green Springs, and Westview placed in the top 20 out of 520 entries in the Burns and McDonnell Battle of the Brains competition.  The competition gave students in the greater Kansas City area to compete to design the next great exhibit for Science City at Union Station. The QUEST team received an honorable mention and $2,500 in grant support for their entry, Mission to Saturn. Mission to Saturn was designed to take visitors on a mission deep into space to compare Saturn and Earth, observe Saturn’s place in our solar system and discover all about Saturn’s composition, rings and moons.
The fifth graders from Heritage were the project managers for the exhibit design project. They mapped out the parts, the timeline to do it, and how everyone would participate. All of the QUEST students from Heritage, Green Springs, and Westview worked together to brainstorm, research, design, sketch, and model the exhibit design. They also wrote a description of the design and created a video. In this project, QUEST students were designers, engineers, builders, researchers, writers, graphic artists, sculptors, astronomers, video producers, and project managers.

The QUEST students from all three schools had a chance to get together with each other for Skype call with an exhibit designer, a visit with our Battle of the Brains mentor from Burns and McDonnell, a field trip to Science City, and the Battle of the Brains ceremony at Union Station.

Mr. McFarland News

Heritage will be piloting a new assessment in January called the MAP test.  MAP stands for Measure of Academic Progress.  Students in grades K-5 will be taking this test.  Kindergarten and First Grade students will take the assessment on laptops and the rest of our students will take it on the iPads.  Here is a link for the testing schedule.

The MAP test will give teachers immediate feedback on how their students are doing compared to the rest of the country.  It will provide information as to where each student is at instructionally and where each student should be going academically.   Parents will receive a report with a score along with the national average and district average.  We will most likely hand these out during February parent-teacher conferences.  This computer based test adjusts to the student knowledge base.  If a student answers a question correctly, the test questions will get harder.  If a student answers incorrectly, the test questions get easier until they find a middle ground of what the student knows.

If the district decides to adopt this assessment, students will be tested each year, once in the fall and once in the spring.  Parents will receive an update after each testing session with their child’s score along with all of their previous scores.  Your child’s teacher will be providing more information after winter break.

This has been a wonderful first semester of the 2015-2016 school year.  I hope all our families are able to take some time over the next few weeks to be with family and enjoy the holiday season.  I look forward to seeing our students return in 2016!

Special Chorus at Crown Center

The Special Chorus, made up of 4th and 5th graders, went to Crown Center and sang in the beautiful Crown Center lobby.  The students were energetic and so entertaining.

After the performance, many students and their families went ice skating.  It was a beautiful night and a lot of fun.

Thank you to Mrs. Owen and all of the parents who came to watch and ice skate!

Assessments

Three of the key ingredients to student achievement are curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments.  Our Board Adopted Curriculum is the general plan for what we want our students to know.  Pedagogy is the process of teaching and learning that happens in our classrooms and beyond each and every day.  Assessments are a way for us to find out where are students are at academically with regards to the curriculum.  There are several formal and informal assessments that happen throughout the school day.  Informal assessments might be observations made by the teacher or daily homework.  These are used to make sure our students are on the right track.  Formal assessments include unit tests per subject area, topic tests in math, reading levels, etc.  Another formal assessment grades 3-5 complete is the Kansas State Assessment.  This occurs every spring to gage how well our students, classroom, school, district and state know the state standards.

Due to new standards being adopted in the state of Kansas, we also have a new state assessment.  Students took the new state assessment last spring and we are now seeing results from these assessments.  If you had a student in grades 3 or 4 last year, your child's scores will be coming home in their backpacks on Friday.  These scores cannot be compared to previous scores since it is an entirely different test.  These results combined with other tools, such as evaluating day-to-day class work, homework, observations made in the classroom and keeping track of how students change and grow throughout the year - are all used to measure a student's progress and assist teachers in gaining insights into the skills, abilities and knowledge of all our students.

This year, all Heritage students will be piloting a new assessment called the MAP test.  MAP stands for Measure of Academic Progress, which is a nationally normed test that will give us valuable information to continue to help our students achieve.  We will be conducting two MAP tests this year, one in the winter and one towards the end of the year.  There are two parts to the MAP test, one part is on reading and one part is on math.  These will be taken on two separate occasions and each part should take somewhere between 30 minutes to an hour to complete.  Heritage teachers are currently going through training to understand how to administer the test as well as how to interpret the results to make more informed decisions to best work with our students.  I am excited about this new opportunity because it will not only give us data to help understand where our students are at academically, but it will also give parents an understanding of how their child is progressing over time.

Classroom teachers will be sending home more specific information on the MAP tests and when these tests will occur.  If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

FEE BASED EARLY CHILDHOOD PEER PARTICIPATION SLOTS

FEE BASED EARLY CHILDHOOD PEER PARTICIPATION SLOTS

The Early Childhood Disabilities program of the Olathe Public Schools incorporates typically developing children into the program.  These students are referred to as “Peers”.
Definition of a “peer” for the ECD program includes children that do not have, or are not suspected of having a disability.  Eligibility to be considered, or to maintain status as a peer in this program requires meeting this definition.
The Olathe Public Schools believes it is important to provide preschoolers with special needs, (Speech/Language delays, behavior concerns, fine and gross motor delays, hearing impairments, genetic disorders, etc.)  the opportunity to learn with peers who are typically developing.
The application process for the 2016 -2017 school year begins on January 7, 2016.  Children must be three or four on or before August 31st in order to participate in the upcoming school year.  Children must speak and understand English and also be toilet trained.
Benefits your child can receive by being a peer participant:
·         More positive/accepting attitudes about people with disabilities
·         More social skills
·         Equal, if not greater, developmental progress
·         Access to a highly qualified teacher
·         Good student to teacher ratio

For information about the application process contact Kim Russell at 913-780-7341 or by email: krussellhlc@olatheschools.org. (There are no waiting lists for future years.)

Heritage Fun Run

Heritage Fun Run
Our Heritage PTO sponsored a fundraising Fun Run on September 24th to help raise money to go towards field trips, classroom supplies, playground upkeep, and teacher wish lists.
The fundraiser lasted 9 days and each day the class with the most pledges for that day won a party.  If a student collected $300 or more in pledges, he/she won a Limousine Ride to Pizza Hut on 151st Street in Olathe for a lunch buffet.
Over $15,000 was pledged thanks to the extremely hard work of our PTO and all of the parents who helped their children with this fundraiser!  And to all of our Hound Dogs who ran LOTS of laps to fulfill their pledges. (Thirty laps equaled 2 miles.)
We would like also thank these businesses for their generous contributions:
Mike Grann Farm Bureau Insurance
Pizza Hut (151st Street, Olathe)
Pinot’s Pallette
360 Gymnastics

1st Grade Bomb Squad Demonstration

Wednesday, September 30th was a fun day!             Mr. Rafols, a Heritage parent and fire fighter, came to school to tell us about his job with the bomb squad.  It was amazing!  He did such a good job presenting that the students didn’t even realize the danger that is involved with that type of job.
He showed the students how the robots work and what they can do.
On Sunday, October 4th at station 51 they will be having an open house type of event for the public.  They will be having fun activities for the kids as well as a display of the robots.  The fire dogs will be there too.  It is at the station by the police department.

Fun Run

We had a wonderful day today at the 2015 Hound Dog Fun Run!  Our students did an amazing job running on a surprisingly warm day.  I want to definitely take this opportunity to thank our PTO for the hard work and perseverance it took to pull off such a great event.  This is a HUGE event to put together, and our PTO put in a lot of hours to make it work.  Because of their work, the money raised gets to stay right here at Heritage!  So a big thank you to our wonderful PTO.  I'd also like to thank our families for donating money towards our school.  This has been the most successful fundraiser in recent years and we have our families and community to thank for their generosity.  Finally, I'd like to thank the parents and grandparents who were able to make it today.  It is awesome to have that kind of support to encourage our students and our school.

I hope the students enjoy their 3-day weekend!

Rachel's Challenge

Rachel’s Challenge Implementation in District Elementary Schools

Thanks to a grant from the Olathe Public Schools Foundation, the Rachel’s Challenge program has become a part of elementary schools in the Olathe Public Schools during this school year and last. Half of the district’s elementary schools implemented the program last school year and the remaining half will be implementing the program this fall. The remaining elementary schools will have a 45-minute assembly for students K-5 in the coming weeks.

The purpose of the elementary programs is to encourage elementary school students to live a life of purpose, do simple acts of kindness and create a KC (Kindness and Compassion) Club to make their school a better place. While Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the tragedy at Columbine High school, this program will focus on Kindness and Compassion and will make no mention of the event.

Stories from Rachel’s life and adaptations of her writings exemplify her belief that small, deliberate acts of kindness could have an impact on the world and a profound effect on those around us. All topics are presented in age-appropriate positive language. For more information about the presentation, please visit the Rachel’s Challenge website at: http://www.rachelschallenge.org/big-picture/programs/elementary/

The following schools will have Rachel’s Challenge in 2015-16: Cedar Creek, Central, Clearwater Creek, Countryside, Forest View, Havencroft, Heatherstone, Heritage, Indian Creek, Madison Place, Pleasant Ridge, Prairie Center, Ridgeview, Rolling Ridge, Sunnyside, Tomahawk, Walnut Grove and Washington.

Parent Information nights have been scheduled for any parent in the district wanting more information about the Rachel’s Challenge elementary programs. Reservations are not needed. The parent nights are at 7 p.m.:

·         Wednesday, September 16, Cedar Creek Elementary School, 11150 S. Clare Road in Olathe.

·         Wednesday, September 23, Indian Creek Elementary School, 15800 W. Indian Creek Parkway in Olathe.
